Kirk Street, Ultimo

Arguably, Kirk Street is the most forgotten street in Ultimo. But it’s right there, in the middle of everything (just off Quarry Street).

Presumably Kirk Street was a dunny lane, like Hackett Street, but it was renamed Kirk Street when they changed all those “lanes” into “streets” (Thanks Charlie Hackett). We’re guessing it was named “Kirk” due to its proximity to the church, but we can’t say that for sure.

Kirk Street still seems a bit like a dunny lane - full of detritus and the rear-ends of businesses. That said, there’s also something quite nice about it. Cute red doorways, potted plants, flat-fronted workers’ cottages.

It ends abruptly in a dead end - it’s the kind of alley you don’t want to run down if you’re trying to get away from someone.
