SMH Half Marathon - new route
This year Sydney Morning Herald Half Marathon (Sunday, May 15, 2011) has a brand new route. It goes through Pyrmont and Ultimo.

Penultimo participated in the 2010 SMH Half Marathon, and we’ve gotta say, it got mighty crowded, and doing two laps of the same course really took the novelty out of pounding the pavement for 2 hours. (Yes, our time was 2:14. Slow but OK for a beginner.)

This year we are strictly spectators, but suspect we might feel pangs of regret for not entering, as we see the runners pour down Pyrmont Street and Harris.

The new route includes many aspects of the old route (Mrs Macquarie’s Chair, Macquarie Street, The Rocks, Hickson Road) but it goes from Sussex Street onto the Western Distributor, and then onto Pyrmont Street, onto Pirrama Road, onto Harris, … some other fiddly bits, briefly onto Quarry and Fig streets too. Basically, we’ll be able to see what Ultimo is like WITHOUT CARS, for half a day. And there will be thousands of sweaty people tramping through. Frankly, this is all quite exciting. Don’t try to drive on Sunday.
