Cafe Dendu serves stuffed monkey

After Friday’s intense Kickboxing sesh, and Saturday morning’s Yoga in the Park (in Mary Ann Street Park, Ultimo), we thought it was high time we ate something naughty.

We usually bypass Cafe Dendu - their coffee isn’t fabulous, and now we have Mecca Espresso in Ultimo, we don’t tend to buy coffee anywhere else (except Tom and Lily’s, which uses Mecca coffee anyhow).

BUT - Cafe Dendu has outdoor seating in a nice little pedestrian section on Bulwara Road. There are trees, dappled light, and usually puppies. Dendu sell cakes and slices and all those sorts of things. When we fronted up to the counter, the Dendu man said exceptionally cheerily,

“How about a ham and cheese roll?”

“I’m thinking … maybe something sweet?”

“Ah! Well … we can help with that. Did you notice how all our cakes are arranged alphabetically?”

“…Oh! So they are. That’s …”

“C for Caramel Slice, C for Croissant, D for Date Slice, M for Museli Cookie, S for Stuffed Monkey.”

“Stuffed Monkey?”

“Yes!”

“What on earth is in a stuffed monkey?”

He grins, ”The ingredients are listed on that sign.”

A quick perusal of the sign revealed that the stuffed monkey contained shortbread, dried fruits and apricot jam. (Um. Ew.)

Anyway, Cafe Dendu’s cheeriness proved contagious, and we have a lovely morning. (And a D for date slice)
