Click the header for a history of Ultimo, care of the Powerhouse Museum.
Or if you can’t be bothered, here’s a tid bit for you:
On the naming of Ultimo, it notes that a surgeon by the name of Harris attempted to aid Governor King in his clamping down on the illegal trade of the naughty New South Wales Corps (aka Rum Corps). Harris was charged with a number of things in an attempt by the Corps to discredit him. The case was sloppily drafted. It was claimed that Harris had committed a crime on “19th ultimo” (meaning 19th last month), when in fact they meant it to say “19th instant” - the 19th of this month. According to the Powerhouse’s history, Harris was acquitted on this technicality, on a clerical error. Governor King was mighty chuffed at Harris’ attempts to squash the rum trade, and so handed Harris a nice plot of land. 34 acres - which Harris happily named “Ultimo”.
